Multifunction observatory for geophysical investigations in water spaces

Project Status: 3 Approved without Funding
Duration in months: 24 months

The Earth is constantly changing planet as a natural way, as well as human activities. Monitoring of these changes is extremely important for an ability to live of all humanity. Observatories on the ground, in the air and in the water are important for this purpose. Seeming at the first glance independent parts of the Earth system are linked to each other via connection of complicated interactions and, therefore, nowadays increasingly started the use of observatory systems which allow simultaneously measuring of many parameters characterizing given ecosystem. Such monitoring is more informative at the contact places of different environments (water-air, land-air, land-water) of ecosystem, because these places are more sensitive to changes of external influences and ecosystem itself.
The development of a multifunction geophysical observatory for water spaces is proposed in this project. Affixed in the contact region of land and water self-powered observatory will be consist of three independently operating parts: seismograph with velocimetry and strong motion (accelerometer) sensors, magnetometer and water quality (degree of acidity or alkalinity (pH), conductivity, temperature and turbidity) testing device. The developed self-powered multifunction observatory will be conformable with international metrology standards for a range of measured values of physical quantities and to be able to connect to the computer system. For a creation of a new sensors and miniaturized instruments (Lab-on-a-Chip system) detection part of water quality testing device will be fabricated by using of laser-assisted technology (pulsed laser deposition technique).
Testing of multifunction geophysical observatory will be carried out in water basins of Armenia (Lake Sevan and man-made water reservoir Marmarik) and Tajikistan (Nurek and Rogun dam). Will be carried out monitoring of these water basins also. Within the framework of presented project, it is supposed to transfer the obtained data to the Bulletin of the International Seismological Centre (UK) and seismic data center of the National Survey for Seismic Protection.
Developed observatory and entering into its structure individually used seismograph, magnetometer and water quality testing device may have an interest for research labs engaged in the study of Earth's ecosystems, as well as firms involved in manufacturing of water quality testing devices.
